the city of Paris in turn announces a boycott of the World Cup
The city of Paris will not install a giant screen and will not broadcast the matches of the 2022 World Cup, played from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar. The French capital joins the revolt led by several cities against the competition organized in the Gulf country.
Little by little, the major French cities are joining a movement to boycott the 2022 World Cup. After Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Lille or Marseille, it is now Paris’s turn to say no.
According to information revealed by AFP on Monday evening, no World Cup match will be broadcast on a giant screen during the competition organized from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar.
“For us, there was no question of setting up match broadcast areas for several reasons: the first is the conditions of the organization of this World Cup, both in terms of the environmental and social aspects, the second, it’s the temporality, the fact that it takes place in December”, slipped to the agency the deputy in charge of Sport, Pierre Rabadan, for whom “this model of major events goes against that [Paris] wish to organize”.
Elected environmentalists demanded a boycott
Despite the situation of Paris Saint-Germain, owned by Qatar, the tricolor capital therefore refuses to participate in the promotion of the 2022 World Cup by not installing any fan zone or any giant screen in order to facilitate the retransmission of matches of the tournament.
This non-dissemination of the meetings will please the elected environmentalists of Paris. Earlier this Monday, the group Les Écologistes called for a boycott of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in the Parisian public space for both human and environmental issues. “The Groupe Les Écologistes de Paris denounces the organization of the Football World Cup in Qatar and asks the City of Paris not to stage the broadcast of this sporting event, organized in conditions contrary to human rights and the environment, had demanded the elected environmentalists via a press release. […] The organization of this Football World Cup in Qatar is also an environmental scandal. While Qatar proclaims with great fanfare the so-called ‘carbon neutrality’ of the world, in reality the construction of infrastructure, the air conditioning of open-air stadiums, and the establishment of more than 160 flights a day for transporting fans from neighboring countries to Qatar is an ecological disaster.”
