Former president Donald Trump On Thursday, he lost a last-ditch effort in court to block the release of his income tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee.
A federal appeals court in Washington denied Trump’s request to rehear a lower court ruling requiring a full panel of judges to turn over tax returns from the Treasury Department.
A three-judge panel of the appeals court unanimously rejected Trump’s appeal of the lower court’s decision in August.
Thursday’s appeals court’s not-entirely-contradicted decision sets the stage for Trump to make an expected request to the Supreme Court to hear his appeal. However, the court is not obliged to satisfy this demand.
The Ways and Means Committee first reviewed Trump’s income tax returns from the Treasury Department in 2019 and Donald J. Requested declarations of Trump’s Revocable Trust and seven limited liability companies, one of which operates as Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Trump was president at the time.
Trump broke decades of tradition by refusing to release his tax returns both as a Republican presidential candidate and as president.
Last December, a federal judge rejected the former president’s challenge to a House committee to obtain tax returns from the Treasury Department as part of an inquiry into how the IRS audits the president’s income tax returns.
A three-judge D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled in August to reject a challenge to that order, although tax returns are generally confidential under federal law, but the guidelines do not apply when the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee requests such returns in writing from the Treasury Department.
