An arrest warrant has been issued for the friend of a North Carolina woman who was found dead while on vacation in Mexico

Mexican prosecutors have obtained an arrest warrant for a North Carolina woman’s friend found dead while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas last month and on Thursday called the death the result of a “direct attack.”

Shankella Robinson, 25, was found dead in a vacation rental while traveling with friends who attended Winston-Salem State University, her father, Bernard Robinson, said.

Robinson arrived in Mexico with six friends on Oct. 28, Mexican prosecutors said Thursday, working with the country’s attorney general and the Foreign Ministry on extradition proceedings.

Evidence indicates the death was the result of “a direct assault, not an accident” and involved one of the victim’s female friends, prosecutors said.

Mexican officials did not name the suspect but confirmed he is a U.S. citizen who may be in the United States. No one has been charged in the case, and authorities have not released the names of Robinson’s friends.

CNN has reached out to the US State Department, the FBI and the US Department of Justice for comment.

Extradition proceedings are underway for the suspect, Daniel de la Rosa, the Attorney General of Baja California, Mexico. local media reported on Wednesday.

“There is already an arrest warrant for the crime of femicide that harms the victim and for her friend, who is allegedly responsible for these acts,” de la Rosa said Wednesday.

The death was not from “an altercation” but from “direct aggression committed by this person,” de la Rosa said.

“We are already following all the relevant procedures, both the Interpol file and the extradition request,” he said.

Robinson last spoke with his mother, Salamondra, on the morning of Oct. 28, his father told CNN last week. The next day, Shankella Robinson was found dead at her vacation home, US and Mexican authorities said.

The cause of death was “severe spinal cord injury and atlas luxation,” which is instability or excessive movement of the cervical vertebrae, according to a copy of his death certificate. CNN affiliate WBTV. She was found unconscious in the living room of the rented residence on Oct. 29, the document said.

The death certificate classified Robinson’s death as “accidental or violent” and noted the approximately 15 minutes between the injury and death.

A video posted online appears to show a physical altercation in a room between Robinson and another man. It is not clear when the video was taken or if it captured the moment of his fatal injury.

The video shows Robinson being thrown to the floor and hit in the head, Bernard Robinson confirmed to CNN.

It is unclear what caused the altercation and how many people were in the room at the time. It is also unclear whether anyone tried to intervene.

The FBI’s Charlotte field office has opened an investigation into Shankella Robinson’s death, it confirmed Friday.

The father said as of a week ago, his family was waiting for more information from friends and Mexican authorities.

“You took my only gem,” he told CNN by phone. “You put a big hole in my heart. All I can do is fight for it; I cannot let him die in vain.’
