College football picks, schedule: predictions vs. spread, odds for top 25 games in Week 12

With two weeks left in the 2022 college football regular season, the Pac-12 is seeking its first College Football Playoff appearance in six years, and the conference is rarely in the spotlight this time of year. The playoff chances are dwindling each Saturday, and two of the biggest Pac-12 games of the season will end on Saturday night. They will go a long way in determining which team will square off in the league title game and whether they have a chance to advance to the CFP.

The playoff-bound team is No. 7 USC, which will be in a different conference, the Big Ten, in two years. As the Pac-12’s lone remaining one-loss program, the Trojans’ elimination of the Bruins is their first step toward making a legitimate CFP bid. No. 18 Notre Dame awaits next week, while USC also has to go through the Pac-12 Championship Game with the remaining “1” in the loss column.

Although the second Pac-12 matchup has lost some of its luster and it starts at 10:30 p.m. ET, No. 17 Oregon at No. 10 California represents the league’s best remaining programs after the aforementioned schools leave for the Big Schools. Ten in 2024. This will surely be one of the most remarkable games played this season.

Elsewhere, No. 1 Georgia looks undefeated in defending its national championship when it visits Kentucky for an SEC East showdown that isn’t as exciting as once predicted. Last week, the Wildcats helped Vanderbilt snap its 26-game SEC losing streak, while Kentucky fell out of every set of top 25 rankings after being in them all season.

No. 4 TCU will likewise try to stay undefeated at Big 12 preseason favorite Baylor, and the bedlam between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will only have rivalry implications as both programs are down this season. Big Ten powers No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan are both in action this weekend, though both programs are multiple favorites in those contests.

Stay tuned to CBS Sports all day college football coverage from opening. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for the best games of Week 12.

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook | Eastern at all times

No. 1 Georgia at Kentucky

15:30 | CBS, CBSSports.com, The CBS Sports appI’ll take the Bulldogs to not only win, but cover the massive spread. The Wildcats have fallen off a cliff, with quarterback Will Lewis throwing more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (four) in the last four games, and last week’s loss to Vanderbilt should be a letdown for a team that once held high hopes. The Bulldogs are keeping their foot on the gas more than usual to keep their starters fit for the stretch. Forecast: Georgia -22.5 — Barrett Sally

No. 22 Oklahoma State at Oklahoma State

Favorite game | Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys

19:30 | ABC, fuboTV (Try it for free) — Oklahoma beat Kansas (with a backup quarterback) and Iowa State, the only team with a worse record than the Sooners in conference play. OU dominated Oklahoma State during the Mike Gundy era, but this is the worst Sooners team in 25 years. There is no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt. Prediction: Oklahoma State +7.5 — Shehan Jeyarajah

No. 7 USC, No. 16 UCLA

Favorite game | UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans

20.00 | Fox, fuboTV (Try it for free) — USC has looked good beating bad teams over the last month, but I’m not sure there’s as much of a difference between these two teams as the rankings show. The Trojans have potential injury issues in addition to the absence of running back Travis Boya, and as far as UCLA’s loss to Arizona is concerned, I think this was the type of loss we’ll likely see at the end of the year. I think the Bruins came back in a big way and stole the win. Prediction: UCLA +2.5 — Chip Patterson

#10 Utah vs. #17 Oregon

Favorite game | Oregon Ducks and Utah Utes

22:30 | ESPN, fuboTV (Try it for free) — Utah dominated Oregon State in two meetings last season, and it’s unclear if the gap has been closed. With first-year Ducks coach Dan Lanning and offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham quarterback Bo Nix playing at an elite level, the Utes will be the most physical team since Oregon’s Week 1 loss to Georgia. The status of Knicks, who was injured in the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to Washington, is also unknown. The loss eliminated Oregon from the playoff conversation, and it will be interesting to see if the Ducks remain highly motivated to play for the Pac-12 title. Prediction: Utah -2 — David Cobb

Illinois at No. 3 Michigan

Favorite game | Michigan Wolverines vs. Illinois Fighting Illini

In the afternoon | ABC, fuboTV (Try it for free) — One of the reasons Michigan beats so many opponents is that it starts games strong. The Wolves have been one of the best first half teams in the country, and they often take their foot off the gas pedal in the second half of the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a similar performance this week as Ohio State approaches. Additionally, Illinois proved to be a superior team in the second half, especially on defense. So Michigan -9.5 1H should definitely be a play. I have Michigan to cover the total, but let’s not overthink it for the sake of it. We have two of the best defenses in the country, and two offenses based on running the ball. It conquered the underworld thousands of years ago and continues to do so today. Prediction: Under 40.5 –Tom Fornelli

#4 TCU at Baylor

Favorite game | Baylor Bears vs TCU Horned Frogs

In the afternoon | Fox, fuboTV (Try it for free) — The Bears were picked to win the Big 12 and showed the talent level needed to beat even elite teams. However, TCU isn’t going to let this opportunity slip against a hated opponent. The Horned Frogs took one more game over Baylor to keep their perfect season alive with a win in Waco, Texas. Prediction: TCU -2.5 — Shehan Jeyarajah
