Brazilian footballer Dani Alves was arrested on Friday January 20 in Barcelona as part of an investigation against him for sexual assault, the Catalan city court announced.

On 10 January a Barcelona court announced it had opened an investigation against a suspected footballer “crime of sexual assault following a complaint filed by a woman”, without mentioning the name of the footballer. This woman, who filed a complaint on Jan. 2, accuses the player of touching himself in a Barcelona nightclub, regional police said.

His club decides to terminate his contract

A few hours after the court decision, his Mexico City-based club Pumas announced the termination of Alves’ contract, which runs until 30 June. “With this decision we want to demonstrate that we cannot tolerate this type of behavior which goes against the spirit of the team and its values”justified President Leopoldo Silva during an exceptional press conference.

In a message sent to the Spanish channel Antena 3 on January 5, the 39-year-old footballer, who has 126 appearances for the Brazilian selection, acknowledged his presence on the scene at the time of the events. He was in the Spanish capital for a few days of vacation after participating in the World Cup in Qatar. But the Pumas de Mexico player denied any criminal conduct and said he did not know the complainant.
